Rārangi District Residents' Association
Rārangi sits on the southern edge of the Marlborough Sounds, a ribbon settlement of about 250 houses that stretches from Monkey Bay in the north, Neal Road to the west, and the Diversion to the south. Our eastern boundary is the beach and waters of Cloudy Bay.
Visitors from town see Rārangi as a bit fringe, which feeds into our spirit of self-reliance. Newcomers comment on the old-fashioned community feeling, and the work of the Rārangi District Residents Association (RDRA) is a big part of that.
The RDRA was established in 1971 and is run by an elected committee of residents. If you live in Rarangi you’re a member of the RDRA.
The RDRA has four key objectives: ·
- To provide one voice for the community of Rārangi when dealing with outside organisations, such as Marlborough District Council. ·
- To provide and encourage social and recreational activities for the community ·
- To fundraise for local amenities, such as the playground and bike track ·
- To advocate for residents on resource management issues such as water consents and flood control.
The RDRA also supports key groups in our area, including the Rārangi Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Emergency Management Group, the Menz Shed and the Rārangi Dawn Chorus predator-free project.
Please Support the RDRA and your Community
The RDRA does not have a guaranteed regular source of income. We have been lucky enough to receive some grants, most recently from MDC and the Small Towns Initiative, but future funding is uncertain.
Due to the considerable amount of time that our volunteers put in our running cost are low however we do have some ongoing responsibilities and expenses.
For example the cost of publishing each Newsletter is around $600 and while we do get some income from advertising this is far from enough to cover the costs of production. We want to continue publishing and delivering the newsletter in some form as we believe it is an important means of communication and connection in the community.
We are responsible for community amenities and take care of their on-going maintenance – for example the community garden, the tennis court, the playground, benches, the petanque court and bus shelters. We also provide funding and support for regular community gatherings and events like the monthly seniors morning teas, open days and christmas functions. We also like to support, where we can, other voluntary groups in Rārangi.
We will carry on investing in the community in these ways and we will continue to apply for grants wherever possible but we also need your support.
If you would like to make a donation – annual, monthly or a one off – we would be very grateful. Please do so by contacting the RDRA President.
We realise that everyone’s situation is different, so please give if you can.
